The Backstreet Boys may have peaked years ago, but the group’s music and likability will always remain “Larger Than Life.”
In addition to being one of the only boy bands to see continued success for so long, they have the uncanny ability to bring people together. One viral video proves nobody can resist the harmonized charms of Kevin, Brian, Howie, AJ, and Nick — even grumpy passengers on the New York City subway.
Civil rights attorney Joel Wertheimer says he certainly “wasn’t in the mood for Showtime” when he boarded the train one night recently. Showtime, he explains, is a New York phenomenon during which “people get on the train, blast music, and dance using the subway poles.”
“Had a really tough week and tonight I was the subway and some guy walks between train cars, shirtless, bumping a speaker,” he added. “But sometimes people and life surprise you and a little magic happens.” Especially when said man starts blasting a classic BSB song, prompting you to record.
Passengers were hit with a big dose of nostalgia when they heard one of the boy band’s most popular songs play over the man’s speaker. But they weren’t annoyed, nor did they shoot him dirty looks. Instead, all of them, including Joel, joined in for an impromptu group sing-along.
Everyone was all smiles as they sang the familiar lyrics to “I Want It That Way.” They weren’t all on key, but that didn’t matter. What was important was for those brief moments, the strangers connected.
Joel and his fellow passengers weren’t the only ones whose days were instantly brightened. Millions watched Joel’s feel-good footage on Twitter and couldn’t help but smile despite their own hardships. The video got so popular, in fact, that it caught the attention of the Backstreet Boys themselves!
Brian took it a step further, uploading a video shout-out to Instagram with the caption, “I do want it this way…”
You see? Our five guys know exactly how to break barriers and help people bond — with their dreamy voices! Keep up the great work, boys, and keep stealing hearts on your DNA World Tour!
Watch as passenger belt it out BSB style on the train below, and share to spread some smiles.
