Kate is 3-years-old and has been diagnosed with Autism. Because of this, her mom was worried how Kate would react while they were on a 2-hour plane ride. Usually, she is fussy and can’t stay still for long. Kate’s mom said that she often receives passive aggressive smiles that say, “please get your child under control.” But that definitely wasn’t the case this time.

When Kate asked the man next to her if he wanted to play ‘turtles,’ her mother had an idea of what to expect. To her surprise, the man – without hesitation – put down his papers and immediately warmed up to Kate. Not only did they play ‘turtles,’ the man started showing Kate pictures of his dogs and anything that would entertain her and make her happy. It was a small act, but Kate’s mom said that “Sometimes the simplest things are such a big deal, right? It’s a big deal for her to treat her as a little person.”
Afterward, Kate’s mom wrote a letter to the man and put it out on the web with hopes of finding the kind man. Within a day, the letter became a “global sensation” and found its way to the kind man. Kate’s mother said of the experience in the letter, “Thank you for entertaining Kate so much that she had her most successful plane ride yet.”
Here’s our takeaway: Even the smallest acts of kindness can go a long way… probably farther than you know.
