Apps That Will Change You, Your Community, and The World

Technology is a huge part of our everyday lives–probably a larger portion than we’d care to admit… Everyone uses Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share their personal lives, but there are a couple apps (free apps, I might add) which can be used to interact with our communities and make a real difference in the world.

1. Flipboard

Learn what’s going on in the world around you. Flipboard lets you pick from different topics like news, design, technology, or sports to personalize your content. Then, flip through vivid articles and photos similar to reading through a magazine. Definitely beats a bunch of endless status updates, and it’s always good to stay informed!

2. Duolingo

A personal favorite: if you’ve ever wanted to learn a new language, or brush up on the Spanish you “learned” in grade school, this is the app for you. Duolingo allows you to be productive while you’re on your phone. The app offers Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and English. The learning process involves a series of lessons, set up like quizzes, with speaking, writing, and reading sections. You can even challenge your friends through the app and impress everyone with your new skills.

3. Charades!

This one is just for fun. It’s so easy to get carried away living in our devices that we forget there are actual people around us to interact with. The Charades! app is a new twist on the classic game of charades where the player holding the phone has to guess what word is displayed on the screen. There are a ton of pop culture categories to choose from and friends can act out the word.

4. Peek

Peek is Yelp for activities. You can use the app to book tours and activities in major US cities, so you’ll never run out of things to see and do! Take a simple quiz to determine what kind of activities you like, and the app sorts activities in the area that are perfect for you. Fun at your fingertips!

5. Feedie

Feedie is the brain child of Topaz Page-Green, a model originally from South Africa, who created The Lunchbox Fund, a nonprofit that provides meals to impoverished, at-risk school children in South Africa. Feedie users can locate participating restaurants in New York City, check in, take a picture of their food and  share it through their social networks. Then, the restaurant donates to The Lunchbox Fund. This is such a simple idea that’s doing some real good.
