Alzheimer’s is a disease that robs so much more than a person’s memory. It takes away a sufferer’s ability to recognize their loved ones and enjoy simple pleasures such as singing along to their favorite songs.
One 87-year-old man in Brazil loves boleros, the slow-tempo Latin music he used to listen to in his youth. Because he has Alzheimer’s, he has trouble remembering the lyrics to any of his favorite songs. But thanks to a kind medical professional, he’s singing once again.
Back in March, EMT Flavio Vitorino Martins da Costa responded to a call about an elderly man with Alzheimer’s disease. The man’s daughter feared he was having a heart attack. Fortunately, when Flavio checked him over, he was fine. In fact, Flavio says he was smiling and making fun of the medical team.
After determining there was no emergency, Flavio got to talking with the octogenarian and learned he really enjoys boleros music. Flavio suggested he sing a song for him, but the man drew a blank when it came to the lyrics. That’s when Flavio decided to sing one of musician Lupicínio Rodrigues’s hits to jog his memory… and it worked!
Flavio uploaded footage of the two crooning the romantic ballad together on Facebook, where it quickly amassed millions of views. People from all over were touched by the ease with which Flavio brightened his patient’s day, made him smile, and helped him access a precious memory.
What they noticed above all else was the care and compassion Flavio brings to his job. He could have just left after making sure the man was physically okay, but he stayed to form a connection. Clearly, this is a man who loves what does.
Check out the pair’s sweet impromptu duet in the clip below, and don’t forget to spread the joy by sharing.
