While Ironman Andrew Powell was on a bike ride with his brother, something tragic happened. A driver with a suspended license hit the two men. The crash was fatal for Frank – the father of triplet girls – but Andrew survived.
However, he did not walk away: he was paralyzed.
The runner with sub three hour marathons was forced to watch his friends run in the Ironman race while sitting in a wheelchair on the sidelines. But that’s when he made one prediction: “I will run this or I will be in a wheelchair running it.” It was a prediction that was 99% impossible – paralysis is not overcome like that.
But, with the help of Frank’s wife Kimberly, Andrew began intense training for the next year’s race… and it paid off. He stunned everyone with what he did. Not only can he run, Andrew is now swimming and biking. It is an athletic and mental feat beyond comprehension.
It’s truly amazing to see what he was able to do with determination and a positive attitude. What a powerful lesson that we can all learn from.
