On July 11th in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, 800,000 people gathered together to make history. They set out to plant 50 million trees in 24 hours. The project was a huge endeavor and officials amassed millions of saplings in order to meet their promised objective.

Their goals were twofold: 1. To make good on India’s pledge to increase the nation’s forest cover by 235 million acres by 2030 ( pledged at the 2015 climate change summit in Paris) and 2. To raise awareness about environmental conservation.

“The world as realized that serious efforts are needed to reduce carbon emissions to mitigate the effects of global climate change,” said Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh’s top elected official. “Uttar Pradesh has made a beginning in this regard.”

And what a beginning! The photos of everyone– of all ages and background– working together to get these saplings in the earth are incredible!

Oh, and Uttar Pradesh’s tree-planters had one other goal: to set a Guinness World Record!

While they narrowly missed their goal of 50 million, they were able to plant an astonishing 49.3 million trees. Auditors from Guinness are verifying the feat now, but at nearly 50 million, it looks like Uttar Pradesh solidly knocked the current record– 847,275 trees planted in Pakistan in 2013– out of the water.

But the project doesn’t end here. The Indian government has designated $6.2 BILLION for more tree planting all over the 29 states in India.

It just goes to show that when people band together, world issues can be solved, one sapling at a time…
