5 Things You’re Probably Doing After A Breakup (That Make It Worse)

Breakups are painful and can make you feel like you’ll never be happy again.

While saying goodbye to someone you love is never easy, you can make it even harder on yourself without knowing it. If you’re experiencing heartbreak right now, keep an eye out for these five unhealthy coping mechanisms and find out what to practice instead.

1. Assuming rejection means you aren’t worthy.

Just because things didn’t work out, that doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. You are worthy of love — especially self-love! Keep in mind that you don’t need a partner to be happy, and spend time with friends and family members who lift you up.

2. Trying to figure out what went wrong — and how you could have fixed things.

Your mind will run in “what if” circles all day if you let it, but it won’t help you move forward. Focus on loving yourself instead. Nourish your body with good food, treat yourself to flowers, or enjoy nature with a relaxing walk.

3. Obsessing over closure.

Sometimes we don’t get the answers we’re looking for, and that’s OK. Embrace the unknown, then let it go. It may be helpful to consider what this relationship taught you about yourself and how you can use that insight for personal growth.

4. Keep dreaming of your future together.

It can be just as hard to let go of the future you envisioned with your partner as the person themself. Remember that the one constant in your life is you, and you have the power to create a different, joyful future.

5. Denying or trying to change your feelings.

You can’t force yourself to stop loving the other person, no matter how hard you try. Let yourself feel whatever you’re feeling. This will help you process your emotions and heal over time.

Rejection hurts, but it can help you make room for even better things! Give it time and remember to always be kind to yourself. You are enough. And you will smile again!
