Leonard Cohen‘s “Hallelujah”is one of the most inspired and powerful songs ever written. Cohen actually wrote more than 80 versions of the song before he was satisfied with the outcome. But even then, when the song was released in 1984, it didn’t garner much success.
Over the years however, it shot to popularity, and has now been covered and recorded by more than 3,000 artists, from southern rock stars to this priest at a wedding.
But few have managed to capture the song’s essence quite like this impromptu choir.
The organization Choir!Choir!Choir!, hosts weekly singing events where anyone, and everyone, who loves music can join in. Pop singers like Teagan and Sara have led these choirs before. But this time C!C!C! managed to gather 1,500 strangers together in an abandoned Toronto power plant. Led by Rufus Wainwright, they broke out into an incredible rendition of Cohen’s Hallelujah.
Rufus leads the first verse, as you would expect, but seconds into the song, the audience begins a tidal wave of sound that gave us chills all over. Seriously.
