15 Selfless “Helpers” Who Would’ve Made Mr. Rogers Proud

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,'” Mr. Rogers said.

Mr. Rogers was known for his words of wisdom, including the quote from above which serves as a great reminder that there will always be people who choose to do good, even during the most difficult of times. To help bring light to those kinds of people, we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite “helper” moments below.

1. With less than 200 meters left in a NYC Marathon, one runner fell to the ground. But thanks to the kindness of complete strangers, he was able to cross the finish line.

2. When a little girl fell into a manhole in the Dominican Republic, several people nearby joined together to rescue her.

3. This woman’s security camera caught the moment when a kind stranger knocked on her door in hopes of returning the wallet he found in a parking lot.

4. People usually want to make their birthdays all about them, but this woman has made it a tradition to complete acts of kindness, in accordance to her age, for the duration of her birth month!

5. The cars stopped at the traffic light were happy to wait as long as needed for an elderly man to cross the street, but thanks to a kindhearted traffic guard, he didn’t have to make the long walk alone.

6. This woman found a way to encourage kindness exactly one year after donating her kidney, aka, on her Kidneyversary!

“I took the day off work to honor it by trekking across NYC and handing out letters to strangers encouraging them to do something kind for a stranger today,” she wrote on Instagram. “My hope is to start not a kidney chain, but a kindness chain.”

7. Natalie Te Paa’s friends wanted her to have the best birthday ever, so they had the restaurant staff write “Happy Birthday” in braille using melted chocolate!

8. This couple started out as friendly neighbors, but now they’re a part of the family.

9. To help out a street vendor he saw, this man bought all of her strawberries… but then he let her keep them!

10. When these three young boys decided to help an elderly man getting off the bus, they didn’t expect to get anything in return… but they did.

11. A hairdresser named Fabrício became a hero when, with the help of a neighbor’s rope, he crossed a flooded rode in order to help a man who was stranded on top of his truck.

12. When NFL quarterback prospect Malik Willis noticed a homeless woman in need of help, he stopped to help in any way he could.

“It was a pregnant lady and she was homeless. And I was just like, ‘Shoot, I don’t have no money, but I can give you a couple of shirts.'” Willis said. “I just felt like I had to do that. I mean, I’m at a position right now where I’m not worried about much of anything except getting better. So, if I can help her out any way, I felt like I had to.”

13. When a reporter saw that a nearby Ukrainian refugee was struggling in their wheelchair, he stopped his live report to help.

14. Justice Smith’s son taught him a very important life lesson when he almost didn’t let his 5-year-old donate 30 cents to a homeless man.

“I almost taught him that pride was more important than helping another human in need… Thank God I quickly snapped out of that foolishness … The smile on that man’s face lit UP the intersection and he said to Justus, ‘God bless you little man! Thank you so much!'” Justice shared on Facebook. “Our son’s pure and genuine act of kindness also caused a chain reaction behind us AFTER the light turned green in rush hour traffic — and it wasn’t a chain reaction of people impatiently honking their horns!”

15. Fred Austin was on route to his next customer when he saw an elderly woman laying on the ground — he didn’t hesitate to leap into action.

Mr. Rogers’ quote was originally meant to help kids cope during scary moments in life they may be too young to fully understand. Now, as adults, it serves two purposes: to remind us of all the good still in the world and to encourage us to become those “helpers” ourselves.
