51-yr-old Jennifer Phillips stepped on stage at X-Factor UK with a big smile on her face. Per usual, Simon asked her what she’d like to sing. Phillips answered ‘Halo.’ The judges must have heard the song a lot that day, because each one reacted to the news like a bad taste in their mouth. She then replied that she could sing a Celine Dion hit, to which one judge replied, “I hate that song.”
The singer was clearly crushed and unsure. After some deliberation, Shannon piped up, “I was looking at your song choices here. If you don’t mind, I’d love to hear ‘Shackles’ by MaryMary. All the judges, Simon included, seemed refreshed and excited to hear the gospel song. Phillips hesitated a moment, then agreed… and it’s a good thing she did. The next few minutes were nothing short of incredible.
The moment she started singing, Phillips transformed into an image all her own. The judges stared wide-eyed as she took the well known tune to new heights with a phenomenal and unique musical gift.
Every judge on the panel and incredible things to say, but we’ll sum it up with this gem of a quote from Simon, “Jennifer, I mean you were gonna sing ‘Halo’ but you had this one in your back pocket… If you’ve ever dreamt what it would feel like this must be it.”
