John Newton grew up in the 1700’s without any particular religious conviction, but ironically enough, ended up writing one of the most popular Christian hymns in history.

As a young man, Newton was conscripted into the British Royal Navy, and after leaving the service became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his ship so severely that he cried out to God for mercy. He made it back to shore safely and immediately left the slave trade to live his life for God.

Out of this experience, Newton penned the world famous and much loved hymn, Amazing grace. It is perhaps the most well known hymn in history, but it just got a world class upgrade.

Two sisters, Kendra and Krista , got together last Mother’s Day to record their version of “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” a popular remake of the classic hymn. Kendra starts the song off slowly with Krista’s guitar accompanying as they build into a beautiful chorus with harmonies to match.

Apparently, the song is a favorite of all the women in their family so Kendra and Krista dedicated it to their mom and grandma. We’re sure it was the best present they could have received.
