Teen Calls 9-1-1 About Running Away From Home, Then Cop Sees His Bedroom & Jumps Into Action.

In the spring of 2014, an officer with the Sumter, South Carolina, police department responded to a rather unusual call: A distressed 13-year-old boy had dialed 911 from a convenience store across the street from where he lived, saying he was thinking about running away from home.

It wasn’t an emergency, not in the real sense of the word. The young boy, Cameron Simmons, was noticeably upset, though, so Officer Gaetano Acerra listened.

His mom had yelled at him for using his older brother’s gaming system. Simple sibling rivalry, but Gaetano’s heart broke when he met Cameron in person and walked him home.

The cop found the teen’s room completely unfurnished. As in, he didn’t even have a bed.

“It was just empty. He had his clothes on the ground in a black garbage bag,” he recalled. “I asked him where he sleeps and he said, ‘Sometime on the couch and sometimes on a blow-up mattress.'”

The family had recently moved to Sumter from Texas to care for a sick relative and was going through a tough transition period.

So, to make things a little easier and his home life a bit more tolerable, Gaetano made it his mission to furnish Cameron’s room.

Several weeks after that 9-1-1 call, he returned to the home.

In tow, he had a new bed, TV, desk, chair, and even a gently used Wii system. While the brothers might find plenty else to fight about, it wouldn’t be about his older brother’s GameCube.

Once word of Gaetano’s good deed got out an outpouring of donations flooded in from around the world. Cameron received more furniture than he knew what to do with.

He also received a bicycle and an air hockey table (that he and his brother gladly share).

And in case you’re worried about any sibling rivalry or jealousy leading to yet another fight, Cameron’s 18-year-old brother also got brand-new furnishings for his room.

“I didn’t expect this, and I’m not one to gloat or brag or even ask for help, but with all these people standing behind us, we can change a lot of lives,” Gaetano said.
