This Saturday was the Iowa Hawkeyes’ season opener, played at Kinnick Stadium. It was also the very first time the stadium broke out a brand-new tradition – one we hope continues for years to come.
The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital overlooks Kinnick Stadium, so last summer, someone on a Hawkeye fan page suggested the team do something to send love to their nearby neighbors…

In the video below, an announcer instructs everyone in the stadium – players, fans, and staff alike – to turn around and give a big wave to the children’s hospital.
The view of the “1st Quarter Wave” was even better inside the hospital.

But Iowa’s head coach Kirk Ferentz is doing more than just waving to the hospital. Last month, he and his wife donated $1 million to neonatal research for the Savvy Ferentz Program. It was created in honor of Ferentz’s grandchild, who passed away after being born at 21 weeks.
