65 Yrs After Tearfully Breaking Off Engagement, Widow’s Daughter Reconnects Mom With Ex-Fiancé.

Over 6 decades ago, Helen Andre and Davy Moakes of Derbyshire, England fell in love. In 1951 the couple was engaged to be married but– before the wedding took place– Helen’s parents intervened. Davy was an artist, and Helen’s family worried that he wouldn’t be able to prove for his bride, so the wedding was called off and Helen and Davy, whose blissful love was shattered, lost touch…

They must have thought– at that point– that they would probably never see each other again… and they certainly would never be married! But last Friday, 65 years after the duo broke up, Helen and Davy finally got married.

Helen’s daughter, Debbie Williams, explained how it happened to BBC News. First, she gave some context to the decades-old breakup: “Back in the 1950’s [being an artist] probably wasn’t considered a good career for a future son-in-law. It broke both their hearts but in those days you did as you were told.”

Debbie knew that her mother had always wondered about Davy, so when Helen became a widow for the third time, Debbie decided to track her mom’s ex-flame down. “They got talking and rekindled their relationship and they fell madly in love.” she said of the precious pair, “I’m so happy for them.”

Davy, 86, confirmed that his love for Helen is still strong: “If you love someone as much as we do, it never goes away.”

Helen, 82, added her two cents, too, saying “I’ve loved him all my life. I’m overjoyed, we’re together at last.”
