Cat Cafe Pairs Rats With Tiny, Orphaned Kittens & The Results Are Too Cute.

When the Cat Garden opened its doors in Taiwan nearly 20 years ago, the concept of combining coffee and lounging with cuddly cats was novel.

But the idea’s spread around the world in the years since, with cat cafes now open everywhere from Japan and India to France, Italy, and the U.S. Many of these establishments also serve as matchmakers of sorts, with their patrons eventually adopting one or more of the furry felines.

The Brooklyn Cat Cafe, which opened last year, is operated by volunteers with the nonprofit Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition. At any given time, numerous felines are available for adoption. But what sets this place apart is that there aren’t just cats living there…

While they’re there, kittens develop friendly, inter-species relationships with – believe it or not, rats.

The cat-rat program launched a couple years ago when the organization began caring for a month-old kitten named Ebony.

Ebony was diagnosed with feline leukemia and had to be kept in isolation, but still, she desperately craved attention and companionship. So in came Ivory, a big white rat.

“He and Ebony became great friends and would cuddle and romp in their crate,”said Anne Levin, manager of the New York establishment.

Ivory and Ebony have both since passed away, but their legacy continues with their successors, Emile and Remy. Both rats grew up with cats and therefore weren’t fazed when they were brought to the cafe to care for other orphaned kittens.

The rats not only groom themselves and each other but also their four-legged friends.
