After Most Inspiring Moment Of Olympics, Athletes Get Rare Medal Only 17 People Have Ever Received.

As the Summer Olympics come to a close we’d like to reflect on one of the most selfless shows of sportsmanship we’ve ever seen. During the women’s 5,000 meter race— 3,000 meters in— American runner Abbey D’Agnostino accidentally clipped New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin’s heel, and the two runners went sprawling to the ground in a tangled heap.

Instead of springing up and running to the finish line, D’Agnostina bent down to help Hamblin to her feet.

After helping Hamblin up, D’Agnostina started running down the track… but quickly realized her knee was injured in the fall. That was the moment that Hamblin turned to steady the woman who had selflessly come to her aid.

D’Agnostina urged her competitor to finish the race. After Hamblin crossed the finish line, she waited for D’Agnostina to do the same. The duo then shared a very special embrace.

Hamblin’s incredible compassion for her fellow athlete drew attention from all around the world. The 28-year-old had given up her chance of an Olympic medal to help someone she’d never met.

The IOC has decided to award the New Zealander the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin medal. Also known as the International Fair Play Committee Award, the medal has only been awarded 17 times in Olympic history.

Hamblin’s sacrifice showed the true nature of the Olympic spirit.
