Dogs, just like humans, have an amazing sense of loyalty and compassion, and when it comes to protecting those they love, they have the incredible capacity to perform extraordinary feats of heroism.
For example, on New Year’s Eve this past year, a golden retriever laid by her injured owner’s side for 20 hours, in below-freezing temperatures, after he fell and broke his neck. She licked his hands and face to keep him conscious until help arrived.
This protective instinct is especially pronounced between a mother and her puppies. Back in 2012, a German shepherd mix named Amanda made headlines after she risked her own life to save her puppies from a house fire in Santa Rosa de Temuco, in central Chile.

Amanda had just given birth to a litter of puppies 10 days earlier, and her babies were still trapped inside the flaming structure. While firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, she was seen rushing between the house and their fire truck.

Each time, she emerged from the house with one of her 10-week-old puppies in her mouth, deposited it on the metal fire truck step, then ran back inside to retrieve the next puppy.

She finally managed to bring her five babies to safety, and the entire brood was later transported to a vet for a checkup. Even then, Amanda initially wouldn’t let him anywhere near her pups but relented once she realized he wanted to help.

Unfortunately, one of the puppies succumbed to his injuries. But the rest survived, and it’s all thanks to their mama’s persistence and determination to do everything she could to keep her babies from harm.
