Tortoise’s Shell Burns Off In Wildfire, But When You See The Replacement They Created You’ll Gasp!

While most of us are aware of the wildfires that have been enveloping parts of North and South American over the last few years, few have come face to face with the conflagrations. Even when these fires avoid populated areas, the native wildlife are forced to flee… and few make it out unscathed.

Freddy the Tortoise is one of these animals that has been through some tough times. Last year, he was caught in the middle of a forest fire in Brazil that left him with badly burned forelegs and a damaged hull.

By the time a kind soul brought Freddy to veterinarian Rodrigo Rabello, the injured tortoise had lost 85% of his shell, was terribly malnourished and was suffering from pneumonia. Rabello considered putting him down, but something about Freddy’s fighting spirit inspired the veterinarian to give him a chance.

And so the self-dubbed ‘Animal Avengers’ team was born. Rabello teamed up with designer and scientist Cicero Moraes to build a 3D printed hull for the homeless tortoise. They even brought in artist Yuri Caldera to mimic the natural shell patterns that would be found on his brothers and sisters. The result is a beautiful display of modern science and the world’s first 3-D Printed shell!
